The Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) kicked off their 2009-10 “What a Difference a Book Makes” literacy campaign and book drive.

The number is set quite high, with a goal of collecting and distributing 100,000 books to the community.

“CCRC is in direct contact with thousands of children and families every year,” said Dr. Michael Olenick, president and CEO of CCRC. “Our commitment is to put a book in the hand of every child we serve for the next year. Through our efforts, we hope to increase the possibility of success for the families we serve by opening a door to learning.”

On Dec. 14, CCRC distributed hundreds of children’s books, and teddy bears to families participating in the agency’s School Readiness Initiative and Family Child Care Home Education Network.

These programs are committed to ongoing training, professional development, and child development assistance to better serve the children and families of the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth was a featured storytime reader and also assisted with the distribution of the donated books.

California’s best bet is to teach our children the importance of reading at a young age. Early education plays a vital role in the future of our children and the community as a whole. In the United States, one in four children grow up not knowing how to read.
