SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita) issued the following statement today after a Sacramento Bee report revealed that former Speaker Karen Bass authorized pay raises for twenty Democratic Caucus staff members on her last day as Speaker:
“The pay increases handed out by Assemblymember Karen Bass last Friday show just how out of touch she is with Californians who are struggling every day to make ends meet.
“At a time when everyone in the state is being asked to tighten their belts, the former Speaker’s action only further erodes the public’s already shaky confidence in the Legislature.”
“Her suggestion that ‘we definitely succeeded in tightening our belt’ is completely disingenuous in light of her recent actions.
“Instead of setting an example in these difficult economic times, she chose to authorize these raises to take effect on her last day as Speaker, suggesting that she knew it was wrong but didn’t want to face the ramifications of her decision.
“I, along with many of my colleagues, have not authorized staff raises since coming to Sacramento in 2006.”
“Now is the time for Democrats and Republicans to stand together and show Californians that we can live within our means, and to prove that we can be trusted with taxpayers’ money.
“Unfortunately, Assemblymember Bass’ actions last week showed complete disregard for the millions of Californians who continue to struggle in these unprecedented times.”
