You’re invited to ‘Milk and Cookies with the Mayor’

Cameron Smyth is milking his title as mayor for all it’s worth.

The city introduced its new “Got Mayor?” campaign Monday, inviting residents to join the mayor for milk and cookies at six upcoming town hall meetings.

The campaign, a spoof of the dairy industry’s “Got Milk?” advertisements, features photographs of Smyth donning a milk mustache.

“He’s the milk and cookies mayor,” said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz.

Smyth said he has wanted to bring town hall meetings back to Santa Clarita, but needed a hook to get the community’s interest. The city used to hold regular town hall meetings, but stopped after attendance began to dwindle.

The town hall meetings are intended to give residents an informal setting to discuss with City Council members ideas to improve their community, Smyth said.

The idea for “Milk and Cookies with the Mayor,” came from a similar campaign in Las Vegas, dubbed “Martinis With the Mayor,” Smyth said.

Ortiz claims credit for the campaign idea – and Smyth wasn’t too quick to jump on the milk and cookies bandwagon. She said it took her about a month to convince him to agree to the stunt.

Ortiz said she followed the proper legal avenues and asked for approval to spoof the “Got Milk” campaign.

“It’s a good chance for us to get the word out on what we’re doing, and to hear from the community at the same time,” Ortiz said.

Smyth said he proposed to bring back the town hall meetings as part of his council election campaign.

“People won’t have to drive across town to go to the meetings,” he said. “We’ll go to them.”

A total of six meetings will be held in different areas of the community. One will be held at the SCV Senior Center and a special teen meeting will be held after school at Sierra Vista Junior High.

“Kids are pretty well informed,” Smyth said. “They bring up the same concerns as their parents.”

The six town hall meetings are scheduled as follows:

• Feb. 26, 7 p.m., City Hall Century conference room.

• March 12, 3:30 p.m., Sierra Vista Junior High School, Room 1003.

• April 2, 7 p.m., Santa Clarita Park.

• June 4, 7 p.m., SCV Senior Center.

• Aug. 6, 7 p.m., Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library.

• Sept. 24, 7 p.m., Newhall Community Center.
